Sir,
I have, etc., to acknowledge the
receipt of your confidential despatch of
26th September, 1946, and to inform you
that I approve of the draft Ordinance
enclosed therewith which is designed to
remove any doubt as to the validity of
marriages solemnised during the period of
the Japanese occupation of the Colony.

On the information available I am in
agreement with your conclusion that
legislation should not be introduced to
validate the exercise of the jurisdiction
of the Supreme Court. by the late Chief
Justice during internment. A letter is
being sent to Messrs. Maddin and Company
on the lines suggested in the last
paragraph
